So we had quite a lot of snow, at least compared to what we usually get. It depends on where you were, but here (Tilburg) we had an inch of snow, a bit of rain to melt it, an inch of snow, more rain to melt the snow, and currently the most recent layer of snow is being trampled into the familiar grey slush we've all got to know and hate.

I noticed that everyone started complaining when they heard there was going to be snow. I was kind of excited when I heard, and was mostly hoping it wouldn't melt right away. When the morning arrived for which snow had been predicted, I was disappointed when I opened my blinds...there wasn't a snowflake in sight, and it was actually pretty sunny. When the clouds came and it started snowing, I waited for everyone to go inside. When everything was quiet, and there was a good layer of snow on the ground, I walked from my home to the university internet cafe, a fifteen minute walk, virgin snow crunching under my feet all the way.

It's such a magical feeling when you're the first one to walk on fresh snow. Call me a loner, but I love the world when it is still and empty. I have a thing for bad weather, provided I'm not forced to experience it. It's partly because of the power of the elements, but also because it makes people go inside, a sure way to declutter the streets and make them much more quiet. I've almost been locked in the university buildings a couple of times because I was enjoying the silence of the empty buildings so much, I forgot about the time. I think my best moment like this, an experience of a temporarily empty world, was when I was sixteen or so. Being a big procrastinator, I left a Greek translation until the last moment. I worked on it all through the night, and when I was done, everything was very cold, but very clear and crisp. The sun was just coming up, and I knew that the people in my street would be asleep for at least another hour. I was happy that I was there to see the sun rise, and in a way, I felt special because I was the only one watching it.

I love snow. And I love walking alone just enjoying the quiet and solitude.

Both combined three years ago in Germany left me wandering through ruins of castles and monestaries for nearly twelve hours. In the end I had walked around 25 km, with just me, the empty world and a book.
I still do that once in a while. At the Summoning I spent the entire saturdayafternoon hiking through the forest. At BBB I spent the early morning walking through the woods around Uden with just a container of coffee. And at Nara I just walked for an hour or so to clear my head after a particularly hefty scene.

Gotta love it.
