Uhm, riiight...
Jan. 13th, 2004 10:23 pmApparently, I can be scary. You may laugh, but that's pretty new to me. I tend to think of myself as your friendly neigbourhood nerd, someone who is more likely to be intimidated than intimidating. But recently, on two separate occasions, I've noticed people actually being impressed by whatever I did. I'm not even sure what I did to get such a reaction...
On the night my current signature picture was made, I was posing for photos, looking deadly serious in my role of elven body guard to the elven noblewomen that were present. I heard someone say they wouldn't like to meet me in a dark alley if they were an orc. Weirdness...but it still could be written off as caused by the armour and big sword.
As my own mundane self, I encountered a smoker in a non-smoking section of the train. I'm quite sensitive to smoke, and while I can endure it, I pay for it by feeling weak and queasy for quite a while. For friends, that's something I can do every now and then, visiting a smoky bar or pub to meet people. But a complete stranger blatantly ignoring the rules, making my clothes smelly and making me feel sick was too much for me to take (on top of the one hour delay).
I asked him politely if he could put out his cigarette, as he was in a non-smoking section, and in fact on a non-smoking train. He kind of laughed vaguely and asked if anyone was bothered by his smoking. Me and some other passengers said yes. He still didn't put out his smoke, and make sarcastic remarks about our behaviour. I stood up, gripping onto the first thing I could find, and looked him straight in the eye. Now I have to explain here that I am six feet tall, and the first object I could find was a rather large umbrella that I gripped like a sword out of sheer force of habit. I was in the fool's guard position though, with my swo...uhm, umbrella positioned behind me in the least threatening position I can think of short of dropping it at my feet and stumbling over it. But he backed off immediately when I asked him to stop or leave and he stopped making fun of us. He put out his cigarette, and left for "a place where nobody minds me having a quiet smoke".
Here, he didn't take me seriously, and I did something to change that. That may sound trivial, but I can't for the life of me remember what exactly I did to cause that effect, and I am a person who likes to know herself...it annoys the heck out of me that I'm confusing myself...it's confusing.
